Freddy Jesus Rosas, a 21-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Friday, May 24, in the 14100 block of Mulberry Drive in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
Rosas was walking about half a mile from his home around 2 a.m. when he was shot, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
He ran about 100 yards down the sidewalk until he collapsed, Alfred said. Residents called 911, and Rosas was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wound to his lower right extremity.
Investigators don't have a motive for the shooting or information about the shooter, Alfred said.

Iva Lee Garrett, a 75-year-old white woman, was shot and killed Thursday, Jan. 11, in the 11800 block of Shoemaker Avenue in South Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Garrett and her husband, Columbus Gerald Garrett, 74, were in the living room of their home around 9 p.m. when their daughter, who was in the back of the house, heard two gunshots, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The daughter came into the living room, saw her parents had been shot and called 911, Mendoza said.
Investigators found Iva Garrett on the couch. She had been shot in the head, according to coroner’s records. Her husband was in his wheelchair beside her, with a gunshot wound to his head and a revolver lying near his chair.
The two were pronounced dead at the scene at 9:20 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Nereida “Neri” Villanueva, a 33-year-old Latina, was fatally shot on Saturday, July 1, in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive in South Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Villanueva was at her apartment with her boyfriend about 11 a.m. when her ex-husband, Efrem Ruben Lozoya, arrived to drop off one of their two children, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore.
After he came inside, Lozoya pulled out a gun and fired at Villanueva and her boyfriend, striking them both, Moore said.
He then fled, leaving the children behind in the apartment, Moore said. It’s not clear if the7-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy witnessed the shooting.
Villanueva was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:28 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Her boyfriend was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive, Moore said.

Miguel De Jesus Castro, a 20-year-old Latino, died Monday, Sept. 26, after he was shot in the 13500 block of Lakeland Road in South Whittier, according to Orange County coroner’s records.
The evening before he died, Castro was visiting a friend who lived on Lakeland Road, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Around 10:50 p.m. the two young men began to argue, Mendoza said. The friend allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Castro in driveway in front of his residence.
Castro was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange and pronounced dead the following day at 3:23 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause was listed as a gunshot wound.
Castro’s friend, Jorge Nicolas Arellano Lopez, 23, was arrested that evening, Mendoza said. Lopez was charged with murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm on Sept. 28 and pleaded not guilty to both charges, according to …
Suanne Frances Maholick, a 71-year-old white woman, was found dead Thursday, April 7, after she was shot in the 13000 block of Lanning Drive in Whittier, according to coroner’s records.
Maholick was found dead in the bedroom of her home, underneath the body of her husband, Walter Joseph Maholick, 65, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Investigators were called to the home by the couple’s landlord and friend, who said she hadn’t seen or heard from them since April 3, Hernandez said.

The stabbing occurred at 7:30 a.m., in a residential neighborhood, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Duran, who lived in San Gabriel, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:17 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Michelle Alexis Young, a 31-year-old white woman, was fatally stabbed Friday, Sept. 5, in the 11500 block of Obert Avenue in South Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 11 p.m., Young was standing outside an apartment building talking to a man when a woman walked up to her and initiated an argument, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The argument escalated, and the woman pulled out a knife and began to stab Young, Hernandez said. Young was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m. at the scene, said Ed Winter, the assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.
“We’re still working on the motive in the killing but at this point there’s no link between anybody,” Hernandez said.

Israel Lopez, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Friday, June 20, in the 11000 block of Carmenita Road in South Whittier, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Orange County coroner’s records.
About 7:19 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon and found Lopez on the curb suffering from stab wounds, said Lt. Dave Coleman with the department.
Investigators believe that Lopez was involved in an altercation with another person. Witnesses said that a person was seen running from the scene, Coleman said.
Lopez was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:56 p.m., according to the Orange County coroner.
