Yocelin Kadi Zuniga, an 18-year-old Latina, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, after she was shot near Vanowen Street and Ethel Avenue in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On Dec. 14 about 9 p.m., Zuniga was in the passenger seat of a white BMW that her boyfriend was driving east on Vanowen Street when the car stopped at Ethel Avenue, said Los Angeles police Det. James Fillmore.
A gray sedan pulled up and a person inside shot at the BMW, striking Zuniga in the head, Fillmore said.
As Zuniga’s boyfriend tried to chase down the sedan, the two cars continued east on Vanowen, then onto Coldwater Canyon Avenue, Fillmore said.
The boyfriend hit a curb, then took Zuniga back to his house and called 911.
Zuniga was taken to a hospital where she was on life support until Dec. 18.

George Angel Garcia, a 43-year-old Latino, was found dead Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, in the 12500 block of Raymer Street in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County medical-examiner coroner’s records.
About 10:30 a.m., officers from the LAPD’s North Hollywood division responded to a call for a death investigation near railroad tracks in the area, police said.
Officers found Garcia near the tracks with blunt force trauma to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are looking for witnesses to the attack, which they believe occurred between 7 and 10:30 a.m. south of the railroad tracks.

Alcides Quiros-Portillo, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, July 20, near Whitsett Avenue and Burbank Boulevard in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
Shortly before 7 p.m., Quiros-Portillo was in an alley behind a 7-Eleven with another person when a light blue sedan drove up, said Los Angeles Police Officer Gabe Bucknell.
The driver inquired about the victim's gang affiliation, shot him, then fled, Bucknell said.
Quiros-Portillo was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:21 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Police identified the suspect as Omar Quintanilla, a 35-year-old Latino, Bucknell said.
Quintanilla has been charged with one count of murder with gang and gun allegations and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Bradley Kavika Hanaway, a 34-year-old white man, was found dead Monday, Jan. 14, in the 7100 block of Whitsett Avenue in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 9 a.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a shooting at Whitsett Fields Park, according to a news release from the department.
Hanaway was discovered by paramedics with gunshot wounds in the parking lot and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:10 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives said that Hanaway was a “known transient” who resided in the area.
LAPD Det. Dave Peteque said that Hanaway was in a park claimed by gang members.
“They shot him for no reason,” Peteque said of the suspects, adding that those who went inside the park were subject to violence and harassment.

Rony Josue Parras-Mendez, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Monday, Dec. 31 in the 13600 block of Vanowen Street in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
About 4:40 a.m., LAPD officers responded to an apartment regarding a call of a screaming woman, according to a news release from the department.
Parras-Mendez came to the door of the apartment armed with a “large kitchen knife,” according to police.
Police said Parras-Mendez was given commands that he ignored and “quickly moved toward one of the officers,” prompting the shooting.
Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:52 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Police said that before the shooting, Parras-Mendez had assaulted a man who lived at the complex. The man received treatment at a local hospital. A nine-inch knife was recovered at the scene, police said.
