Ricardo Daniel Fernandez, a 43-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Jan, 9, after he was shot in the 5900 block of Malburg Way in the city of Vernon, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Investigators believe Fernandez was sitting in his pickup truck in the driveway to an industrial park, near a homeless encampment, when someone shot him about 8:40 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
A Vernon police officer heard the gunshots and discovered Fernandez’ truck crashed into a loading dock at the bottom of the driveway, Mendoza said.
Paramedics took Fernandez to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.
Fernandez lived in El Monte, Mendoza said, but he was known to frequent the area around the encampment.

Loui Javier Martinez, a 28-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, near the intersection of Alameda and East 38th Street in Vernon, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1 a.m., Vernon police responded to a call regarding a shooting in the area, according to a news release from the department. Upon arriving, officers found Martinez with multiple gunshot wounds.
Martinez was taken to a hospital where he later died at 6 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives said the shooting took place near the middle of the roadway and that another motorist witnessed the incident. After the shooting, the suspect fled westbound on East 41st Street with the rear bumper dangling off the left corner, police said. The suspect vehicle was described as a blue/green sedan with damage to the rear bumper.

Maria Castaneda, a 24-year-old Latina, was found dead Monday, July 2, in the 4600 block of Fruitland Avenue in Vernon, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Castaneda's body was discovered near railroad tracks by a passerby about 7:30 a.m., said Vernon police Lt. Jerry Winegar.
Authorities said the woman had a "penetrating" head wound and they were investigating the death as a homicide.
Coroner's records later revealed Castaneda suffered a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The tracks, located along a railroad "spur" used for deliveries to commercial buildings, are not used for through-traffic, Winegar told City News Service.

Jaime Sanchez, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot several times and killed on Monday, May 18, in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Sanchez was shot about 9:40 a.m. at his place of work, Bohnhoff Lumber Co. His boss, and the owner of the lumber yard, Charles Alan Bohnhoff, 55, was also killed.
