Mikie Sontero Tarango, a 41-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Monday, Dec. 23, in the 1100 block of East Larkwood Street in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
Tarango was in his garage with his brother and a female friend around 9 p.m. when two men walked up and at least one of the men began shooting, striking all three of the people inside, said West Covina Police Lt. Travis Tibbetts.
Tarango was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:25 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.
His brother was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive, Tibbetts said. The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Jose Jesus Millan, also known as Jose Jesus Alfredo Millan, a 24-year-old Latino, was pronounced dead on Monday, Oct. 7, after he was shot in a brushy area outside the Big League Dreams sports park at 2100 South Azusa Avenue in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
West Covina Police officers began searching the area that evening after family members received an anonymous call saying Millan had been killed, according to coroner's records.
Officers found Millan's body in a little camp, where it appeared he had been dead for some time, said Lt. Travis Tibbetts. Investigators later learned that someone who had been working in the area iscovered his body, Tibbetts said.

Jose Manuel Melendez, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot to death Friday, Aug. 12, in the 800 block of East Michelle Street in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
At about 10:15 p.m., West Covina police received a call about gunshots at a house party, according to a news release. Officers found Melendez in the backyard with a gunshot wound to his chest and back, according to coroner’s records. He was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. at the scene.
Another person who was struck by gunfire taken to the hospital and released, the news release said.
Police do not know the motive of the attack and said the gunshot victims do not have any gang ties, according to the release.
Shu Zhang, a 60-year-old woman from China, was shot and killed Wednesday, April 13, in the 1300 block of Oahu Street in West Covina, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Zhang and her husband, Aiping Diao, a 60-year-old Chinese national, had come from their home in Sichuan, China, to visit their daughter and her husband and children at their Oahu Street condominium, according to authorities.
The night of the shooting, their daughter was at work and the couple were at home with their son-in-law, Caminero Wang, and their three grandchildren, said Det. Brandon Karmann.
