George Leon McKinney, a 65-year-old black man, died Thursday, May 24, after he was struck in the head in the 8700 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators.
McKinney, a homeless man, was pushing a cart and walking south on Santa Monica Boulevard around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, when he entered the intersection at Hilldale Avenue, according to Lt. Rodney Moore.
Investigators think someone came up behind McKinney and struck him in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the street, Moore said.
McKinney was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:36 a.m. the following day, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Bernar Arlain, a 32-year-old black man, died Sunday, March 4, after he was stabbed in 7100 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Arlain was sitting near a bus stop waiting area when he began to argue with another man about 1:14 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The argument escalated to a physical fight, and the suspect stabbed Arlain in the upper body, Mendoza said.
Arlain was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as a stab wound to the right arm.
The suspect was last seen running east, away from the bus stop, Mendoza said. No suspect description was available.

Whitney Jade Washuta, a 25-year-old white woman, was shot and killed on Tuesday, April 18, in the 8700 block of Rosewood Avenue in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Washuta was walking near her home around 8:40 p.m. when she was shot by a man who then fled, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore.
Washuta collapsed on the sidewalk, where she was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Family and friends told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that Washuta and her sister had moved to West Hollywood from the East Coast five years earlier. They said she had been walking her dog moments before she was shot.

Iana Kasian, a 30-year-old Ukrainian woman, was found dead Thursday, May 26, in the 8500 block of Holloway Drive in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 11:30 a.m., authorities found Kasian’s mangled body in the apartment she shared with Blake Leibel, her boyfriend and the father of their 3-week-old daughter.
Prosecutors said that Kasian was “tortured and mutilated” and that the “blood was drained from her body,” according to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Leibel, a graphic novelist, screenwriter and son of a prominent developer in Toronto, also was inside the apartment and was taken into custody, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Dave Coleman told The Times. He had barricaded himself inside by putting furniture and bedding against the door, and he seemed “agitated and uncooperative,” Coleman said.

Richard James, a 23-year-old black man, died early Wednesday, Oct. 14, after he was shot in the 8400 block of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
James was standing with a group of people in the patio outside the Comedy Store when a black male wearing a hooded sweatshirt began shooting, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Steve Jauch.
Witnesses told KTLA-TV that at least six shots were fired. James was struck at least once in the upper torso and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:36 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
James was not a California resident, but Jauch said he couldn't say more about where James lived or why he was in Los Angeles out of fear that it could hurt the investigation.

Los Angeles County firefighters discovered Young about 11:30 p.m. after they extinguished a fire at 9080 Santa Monica Blvd., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch.
Young, a homeless man, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 a.m. on May 21.
The coroner’s office has not released the cause of death, but Jauch said the fire at the building was deliberately set, and Young's death "appears to be related to a criminal fire."

About 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a man with a knife in an apartment complex, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
When deputies arrived, they were directed to an apartment where the knife-wielding man was said to be. Deputies were told that there were two men who lived in the apartment, and the man with the knife was white with a thin build and a black shirt.
A sergeant directed an entry team, along with deputies armed with “less than lethal” weapons. The team staged itself outside the front door of the apartment and announced themselves, but no one responded.

Kurtland Ma, a 34-year-old Asian man, was stabbed to death Saturday, March 29, in the 900 block of Palm Avenue in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Deputies responded to an apartment to perform a welfare check and were told that the person who lived there may have killed his roommate and was thinking about killing himself, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies forced their way into the apartment after no response and found Ma on the kitchen floor with stab wounds, according to the news release.
Ma was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 6:53 p.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner's spokesman.

Los Angeles police found Doe's body after receiving reports of a foul odor coming from a vehicle parked near Willoughby and North Genesee avenues, said Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Authorities say the body found in a Cadillac Escalade probably had been in the vehicle for several days and was so decomposed that it was unidentifiable. Coroner’s records show the victim had a gunshot wound to the chest.

Alan Thomas, a 51-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, May 20, near Knoll Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Thomas, a Metro bus driver, was on duty and leaving an MTA layover area about 9:10 a.m. when he was fatally shot, said MTA spokesman Rick Jager.
The alleged shooter, Anthony Craig Chambers, 41, was the lone passenger on the bus when the killing occurred, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.
Chambers was booked on suspicion of murder at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station and was being held in lieu of $1-million bail.
“We’re kind of in shock here,” said Jager. “When you lose a Metro family member, it affects everyone.”
