Marco Antonio Vazquez, a 37-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies on Sunday, Oct. 6, in the 8200 block of Rexall Avenue in West Whittier-Los Nietos, according to Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
Vazquez lived in a house with his wife, children, parents and other family members in West Whittier, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
Around 8 p.m. neighbors called deputies to report that Vazquez was running around the outside of his house with a machete in his hand, banging on the windows, Alfred said.
When deputies arrived, Vazquez was in the house and family members told investigators that Vazquez was paranoid and schizophrenic, and sometimes became overly protective of his family.

Nadia Solis, a 41-year-old Latina, was pronounced dead on Saturday, Jan. 5, after she was struck in the head in the 8700 block of Orange Street in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators.
Deputies went to the home where Solis lived with her long-time boyfriend, Luis Rey JimenezJimenez, after coworkers requested a welfare check because she hadn't come to work for several days, said Lt. Derrick Alfred.
Worried co-workers had come to the house earlier in the week and talked to a relative who was babysitting, The Times reported. The relative said Solis had left and no one knew where she had gone.

Hector Jesus Rios, an 18-year-old Latino, died Sunday, Feb. 14 after he was shot at Broadway and Reichling Lane in the West Whittier-Los Nietos area, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Rios, a resident of Fullerton, was riding in a car heading east on Reichling Lane when someone opened fire on the vehicle at about 1:08 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
The bullets struck Rios and the driver of the car, a 19-year-old Santa Ana resident, said Hernandez. The driver jumped out of the car, which continued rolling until it collided with a light pole at the southeast corner of Reichling and Broadway, in front of the Sorenson Library.

Oscar Lotari Romero, a 47-year-old Latino, died after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday, July 29, in the 12000 block of Rose Hedge Drive in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The incident began about 11 p.m. when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Pico Rivera Station received a call about a family disturbance, according to a department news release.
When deputies arrived in the residential area, they were told Romero was drunk, arguing and damaging property, the release said.
Romero came outside and allegedly told deputies that "he was going to bash their heads in," according to the release, and then went back inside.
Romero then came out again, this time carrying a metal stick, which he allegedly swung at a deputy, striking him in the arm, according to the release.

Arturo Roque, a 45-year-old Latino, was fatally wounded Sunday, Sept. 1, in the 6100 block of Pioneer Boulevard in Whittier, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.
Roque and his wife were in their front yard with another couple about 10 p.m. when a white compact car drove north on Pioneer Boulevard and a person inside began shooting at the group, said Lt. John Corina with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
Roque was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
No one else was injured in the shooting, Corina said.
Roque was not involved in gangs or illegal activity, but a relative could have been, Corina said.
A neighbor told the Whittier Daily News that Roque “was a soft-spoken, responsible man who worked as a gardener.”

Joshua Shoop, a 35-year-old white man, was fatally shot by law enforcement Sunday, Dec. 23, in the 7700 block of Norwalk Boulevard in West Whittier-Los Nietos, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Whittier police officers were attempting to stop a stolen car near Norwalk and Washington boulevards in west Whittier when police were shot at about 12:30 a.m. and then fled, authorities said. Sheriff's deputies joined in the search for the suspects.
The search ended in a stand-off with two suspects barricaded in a garage. Nearby homes were evacuated.
At least one shot was fired out of the garage at sheriff's deputies, according to a sheriff's statement.
A woman came out of the garage about 4:30 a.m. and surrendered, while her male companion, later identified as Joshua Shoop, remained inside, authorities said.

Joseph Richard Garcia, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Sept. 10, in the 6000 block of Norwalk Boulevard in West Whittier-Los Nietos, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Garcia was shot while walking on the sidewalk about 4:29 p.m.
Authorities were called and the victim was taken by paramedics to the hospital, but died en route, Winter said. He was pronounced dead in the ambulance at 4:39 p.m.
According to coroner's records, Garcia was shot several times in the neck and chest.
There were no other additional details about the killing.

Jacob Dominguez, a 24-year-old Latino, died Saturday, April 28, a day after he was shot in the 6600 block of Danby Avenue in West Whittier-Los Nietos, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Dominguez and his girlfriend were walking April 27 about 10:45 p.m. when an unknown person leaped from a car and shot him, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.
The alleged assailant also pistol-whipped the woman, Winter said.
Authorities were called and the victim was taken to County USC Medical Center where he died the next day at 1:03 a.m.
Coroner's records show the Dominguez died from a gunshot wound to the back.

Gustavo Sanchez Garcia, a 17-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Jan. 19, in the 8300 block of Norwalk Boulevard in West Whittier-Los Nietos, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Deputies found Garcia in an alley about 10:16 p.m. after responding to a call about a gunshot victim, Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.
The teen was shot once in the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene, Grubb said.
Detectives are looking for a person seen leaving the scene in a dark gray compact vehicle, Grubb said. No weapon have been recovered.
