Ryan Twyman, a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies Thursday, June 6, near East 132nd and South San Pedro streets in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
Twyman was sitting in a white sedan with another person in the parking lot of an apartment complex about 7:30 p.m. when the sheriff's department said in a statement that deputies approached him.
“During the contact, a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the department said in a statement.
It remains unclear what prompted the shooting.
Twyman was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:50 p.m., according to coroner's records.
He was one of three men killed by sheriff's deputies in a single day.

Denzel Wesley Jones, a 22-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sunday, July 29, in the 11900 block of Willowbrook Avenue in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Jones was standing outside a friend’s home, talking with a small group of friends, when a man walked up and began shooting in their direction shortly before 1 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The gunfire struck Jones and one of his friends, a Latina adult, Mendoza said.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:02 a.m. according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.
The Latina was shot in the cheek and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mendoza said.

Frank James Stringfellow Jr., a 19-year-old black man, died Tuesday, July 10, after he was shot at 11800 Wilmington Ave. in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Stringfellow was in his car about 9:35 p.m. July 9, trying to turn around in a McDonald’s restaurant parking lot, when someone began shooting, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
“We think he was going to get food, and maybe the line was too long because he started to make a three-point turn, and while he was making the turn the suspect came up and shot him inside the car,” Alfred said.
Stringfellow was able to complete his turn and drive a short distance in the parking lot before he collided with another car, Alfred said.

Mayra Karina Portillo-Moreno, a 29-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Saturday, April 21, in the 12400 block of Grandee Avenue in the Willowbrook neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Portillo-Moreno and Juan Rodriguez, her longtime boyfriend, were having an argument around 1:40 a.m. in the home they shared with their three children, ages 8, 3 and 1, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore.
During the argument, Rodriguez picked up a gun and fired several times at Portillo-Moreno, Moore said. The shots struck the woman in her upper torso. Their 8-year-old daughter also was shot, Moore said.
Deputies found Portillo-Moreno dead in the house with her two younger children, who had not been injured during the shooting.

Nathaniel Grace, a 45-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 19, in the 12000 block of South Willowbrook Avenue in the South Los Angeles community of Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Grace was inside his apartment with six other friends around 3:45 a.m. when a man knocked on the door, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
The people inside the apartment told investigators they couldn’t identify the man, although they had seen him approaching through the window, Mendoza said.
When they didn’t open the door, the man outside began shooting, Mendoza said. The bullets struck Grace, who was standing on the other side of the door.

Frank Curtis Douglas III, a 25-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Feb. 15, in the 300 block of East 139th Street in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Douglas had spent Valentine’s night with a friend in Willowbrook and went outside to his car shortly before 6 a.m. to go to work, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said.
He was inside his white Dodge Charger when someone walked up to the car and shot him multiple times through the driver’s side window, Alfred said.
“He probably never saw it coming,” Alfred said.
Douglas was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:14 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Gustavo Campos Gutierrez, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Jan. 20, in the 12700 block of South Main Street in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Lops Angeles County coroner’s records.
Gutierrez was driving south on South Main Street about 7 p.m. when he pulled over to the curb just south of East 127th Street, about a half block north of a Jack in the Box restaurant that was his intended destination, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
It’s not clear why Gutierrez pulled over, Mendoza said, but as soon as he stopped, a Latino adult standing on the sidewalk began shooting into the car.
Gutierrez was struck by gunfire. His passenger, a male juvenile family member, was not injured.

James Edwards Bills Jr., a 57-year-old black man, died Wednesday, Oct, 18, after he was stabbed in the 100 block of West 132nd Street in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Bills was one of many homeless people who live in cars or motor homes along this wide, industrial street, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.
Investigators think some kind of argument occurred that morning around 8:55, and Bills was stabbed, Alfred said.
Bills was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:01 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Investigators believe they have recovered the weapon, “an improvised stabbing instrument,” Alfred said. They suspect is described as a black male in his late teens who is considered to be a transient.
