Brian Leslie Statler, a 30-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Inglewood police Wednesday, March 27, in the 300 block of S. Market Street in Inglewood, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
About 3:30 p.m., Statler drove up to the Church of Scientology of Inglewood in a white Bentley and walked inside with a “very large sword,” police said.
About five people were in the lobby when Statler entered. Police would not describe what happened inside, but said that two police officers, along with Statler, were shot.
Statler was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
One officer was shot in the hand, the other in the forearm. Neither injury was believed to be life-threatening.

Dimas Diaz Jr., a 43-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers on Saturday, Jan. 12, on the 101 Freeway just north of the Las Virgenes Road exit in Calabasas, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
The incident began in the late morning when Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputies went to a home in Camarillo regarding a domestic violence incident, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Scott Hoglund. The alleged assault involved a woman Diaz had been dating, Hoglund said.
When the deputies arrived, Diaz fled in a stolen sedan, Hoglund said, and the deputies got into their car and gave chase, through the city limits of Camarillo. When Diaz drove south on the 101 Freeway, California Highway Patrol officers joined the pursuit.

Rony Josue Parras-Mendez, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Monday, Dec. 31 in the 13600 block of Vanowen Street in Valley Glen, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
About 4:40 a.m., LAPD officers responded to an apartment regarding a call of a screaming woman, according to a news release from the department.
Parras-Mendez came to the door of the apartment armed with a “large kitchen knife,” according to police.
Police said Parras-Mendez was given commands that he ignored and “quickly moved toward one of the officers,” prompting the shooting.
Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:52 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
