Akeem Jamaal Coburn, a 30-year-old Black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 29, in the 13600 block of South Vermont Avenue in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

At 10:10 p.m., Coburn was standing in a driveway when a person walked up to him and began firing, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nathan Kouri.

Coburn began running away and collapsed in the backyard of a home, police said.

Coburn was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Coburn was not a gang member and police are looking into the motive.

Akeem, better known as AJ, to his family was a very loving, humble soul. It has been 56 days since his murder and no arrest(s) have been made. Akeem was murdered the night of July 29th, 2020, while allegedly picking up his fiancée’s daughter, at her family’s house. Akeem was an upstanding, law abiding, hard working man with absolutely no gang affiliations or enemies. He worked for LA DWP, who have been a great support, so much so, it was the 1st time in LA DWP history, to bring out a utility truck, showcasing AJ’s work helmet, vest and boots, during his burial at Inglewood Park Cemetery on August 15, 2020. He had a promising future there that was cut short at the young age of 30. His family, including his two young daughters continue to grieve for their lost and the lost to the community. It’s the hope of the family that justice will be served as it is well deserved!
