Alejandro Valencia Mendez, 70

Alejandro Valencia Mendez, a 70-year-old Latino, was shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Saturday, March 4, near West Olympic Boulevard and South Broadway downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:30 p.m., a man was wielding a pipe outside a Carl’s Jr. restaurant in the area, said Liliana Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department. According to coroner’s records, Mendez was attacking people with the large metal pipe.

Officers attempted to use Tasers, but after that proved ineffective, they fired at Mendez, Preciado said.

Mendez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:14 p.m.

Police have not yet released the identify of the police officers involved in the shooting.
