A story for every victim

Alex Lopez III, 40

Alex Lopez III, a 40-year-old Latino, died Saturday, June 30, after he was stabbed in the 400 block of West Holt Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Lopez was with a group of people in a rear alley behind 470 W. Holt Ave., just east of Rebecca Street, when he got into an argument with another man shortly after noon, said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.

The man became angry and stabbed Lopez several times before running away toward Holt Avenue, Hagerty said.

When officers arrived around 12:30 p.m., they found Lopez lying in a pool of blood, Hagerty said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators used information from witnesses and surveillance video to identify a suspect in the stabbing, a homeless man named Jacob Godoy, a 28-year-old Latino, Hagerty said. Lopez also was homeless.

Pomona Police arrested Godoy on July 10 during a traffic stop in the 1300 block of E. Holt Avenue.

Godoy was charged with murder on July 12, according to Sarah Ardalani, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. His arraignment was continued to July 31. Bail was set at $4 million, according to jail records.
