Alexander Johnson, 25

Alexander Johnson, a 25-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 18, in the 2100 block of Earl Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:20 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to a call of shots fired, according to a news release from the department.

Detectives believe that Johnson was standing in the area when a dark-colored vehicle drove up. Johnson and the driver of the vehicle got into an argument and the driver, believed to be a black male, pulled out a gun and fired, police said.

Johnson was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police arrested Jemar Welch, a 21-year-old black man, on suspicion of murder July 27. He has been charged with one count of murder with weapon and gang allegations, according to a criminal complaint filed by Los Angeles County prosecutors. 

Welch is due in court for an arraignment Aug. 1, according to prosecutors.
