Alvaro Mata-Rizo, 30

Alvaro Mata-Rizo, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, June 19 near East 51st Street and McKinley Avenue in South Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10:50 p.m., Mata-Rizo was selling tacos on the corner when he was approached by three Latinos, one of whom was armed with a rifle, LAPD Det. Richard Arciniega said. The three robbed Mata-Rizo, then opened fire.

The men then ran to a red sedan nearby and fled.

Mata-Rizo, of Bell Gardens, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:01 p.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

People in the area told NBC Los Angeles that Mata-Rizo, a husband and father, was a popular taco vendor who would sometimes give food away.

Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD’s Newton homicide detectives at (323) 846-6556. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
