A story for every victim

Anthony Carlos, 22

Anthony Carlos, a 22-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Aug. 27 near La Calandria Drive and Lombardy Boulevard in El Sereno, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 3 p.m., Carlos was in a white pickup truck stopped at an intersection when a man drove up behind him in a dark-colored SUV, LAPD Det. Jose Ramirez said.

Ramirez said the two “exchanged words,” then the gunman shot Carlos. Carlos tried to get out of his truck and was shot again. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Witnesses identified Fernando Ortiz, a 31-year-old Latino, as the gunman, Ramirez said. Ortiz was arrested on suspicion of murder the next day after police found him at his girlfriend’s apartment in El Monte, Ramirez said.

Ortiz tried to flee, but police were able to take him into custody. Ortiz was charged Sept. 1 with one count of murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He pleaded not guilty Sept. 16 and is due back in court Oct. 20.
