A story for every victim

Antonio Banda, 23

Antonio Banda, a 23-year-old Latino, died Monday, July 10, after he was shot in the 1900 block of West 156th Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Banda and a friend, Carlos Velasquez, 22, were visiting someone in a trailer at the Westland Village Mobile Home Park the night of July 9, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina said.

Deputies were called to the area around 12:18 a.m. regarding a gunshot victim. When they arrived, they discovered both Banda and Velasquez had been shot, Corina said.

Banda, a Compton resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:33 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Velasquez, who lived in San Jacinto, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:02 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Both men had some involvement with a Compton street gang, Corina said, and investigators think the shooting is gang related. The shooter, a Latino adult, was last seen running west through the mobile home park.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
