Armando Velazquez, 42 [Updated]

Armando Velazquez, a 42-year-old Latino, died Monday, Oct. 18, two days after he was shot in the 8700 block of Langdon Avenue in North Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Velazquez was driving a car on Oct. 16 about 9:40 p.m. when he was shot by an unknown assailant.

Authorities were called and Velazquez was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center where he remained until his death on Oct. 18 at 9:45 a.m.

According to coroner's records, he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The Times has contacted investigators to obtain more information about the case and will provide an update as soon as possible.

[Updated at 2:55, Oct. 29: Los Angeles Police Department Mission Det. Efren Gutierrez, who is handling the case, said Velazquez was driving through gang territory at the time of the shooting. He was "an unintended target" and was hit by a stray bullet, he said.

At this time, investigators do not have a description of the shooter.
