A story for every victim

Arturo Martin Samperio, 29

Arturo Martin Sampiero, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, May 24, in the 4500 block of West 173rd Street in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.

Sampiero had gone to the store and was returning home in a Lyft around 1:30 a.m. when someone confronted him as he was getting out of the car, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.

The driver heard "some kind of exchange involving [Sampiero's] status in a gang," Alfred said. "Words were exchanged, gunfire erupted and the driver said, 'I'm getting out of here,' and took off, although he did come back."

Sampiero was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds to the back.

Investigators don't know whether Sampiero was targeted at the market by someone who followed him home, or if someone was waiting for him to return, Alfred said.

Sampiero had been released from prison earlier this year, he said, and investigators believe the shooting involved a gang member.
