A story for every victim

Arturo Roque, 45

Arturo Roque, a 45-year-old Latino, was fatally wounded Sunday, Sept. 1, in the 6100 block of Pioneer Boulevard in Whittier, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Roque and his wife were in their front yard with another couple about 10 p.m. when a white compact car drove north on Pioneer Boulevard and a person inside began shooting at the group, said Lt. John Corina with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

Roque was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

No one else was injured in the shooting, Corina said.

Roque was not involved in gangs or illegal activity, but a relative could have been, Corina said.

A neighbor told the Whittier Daily News that Roque “was a soft-spoken, responsible man who worked as a gardener.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
