Bahati Moja Dunbar, 40

Bahati Moja Dunbar (2010-04-28)

Bahati Dunbar, a 40-year-old black man, was killed Wednesday, April 28, in the 12000 block of South Main Street in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Update May 4: Based on the initial report from the coroner's office, spokesman Ed Winter initially said that Dunbar had been shot during a bar fight. Los Angeles County sheriff's officials now say Dunbar was not involved in the fight and was shot as the gunmen were about to leave the location.

Several people were outside of a bar when a fight broke out about 12:30 a.m., said Det. Louie Aguilera, who is handling the investigation.

Two men involved in the altercation left the area but returned 20 minutes later to continue the feud. The persons they were looking for were not there, so they got into their vehicle, Aguilera said.

As the two men were about to drive away from the area, they exchanged words with Dunbar and another bar patron, both not involved in the original fight, then began shooting.

Dunbar was struck several times, no one else was hurt, Aguilera said.

Authorities were called, and Dunbar was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:09 a.m., according to coroner's records.

Witnesses described the assailants as male blacks in their 20s, and they were last seen driving away in a white compact car.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Aguilera at the sheriff's homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.]
