Charles Crecell Montgomery (2010-01-15)

Charles Montgomery, a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 15, in the 400 block of East 104th Street in Green Meadows, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Det. Joseph Kirby said Montgomery was walking west along 104th Street about 2 p.m. when he was approached by an unidentified man who began chasing him the opposite way toward Avalon Boulevard.

Kirby said the assailant began shooting, hitting Montgomery several times in his upper body. He collapsed onto the street, where he was pronounced dead at 2:19 p.m., Kirby said.

The motive for the killing is unknown, Kirby said. Montgomery was not a documented gang member and had no recent or serious criminal history, he said. Neighbors told detectives he was known for taking regular walks around the neighborhood.

The gunman was described by witnesses as a thin black man about 5 feet 11, in his mid-20s to mid-30s. Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD South Bureau detectives at (213) 485-4341.
