Cheryl Dejarnette, 53

Cheryl Dejarnette, a 53-year-old black woman, was beaten to death Tuesday, Oct. 22, near 87th Street and Broadway in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 2 a.m. a person sleeping in a vacant lot was awakened by the sounds of breaking glass and saw Dejarnette being beaten by a man, said LAPD Det. Supervisor Sal LaBarbera.

The witness left, then came back to the vacant lot about 7 a.m. and found the woman’s lifeless body covered by foliage, LaBarbera said.

The witness described the suspect as black, possibly in his mid-30s and wearing dark clothing.

Dejarnette was a known transient in the area.

She was pronounced dead at 7:50 a.m. in the vacant lot, according to coroner’s records.
