Christian Alcantar, 23 [Updated]

Christian Alcantar, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Aug. 22, in the 3100 block of North Sunol Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Alcantar was standing on the sidewalk about 3:30 a.m. when a car drove by and someone inside shot at him.

Authorities were called and he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m., according to coroner's records.

The Times has contacted investigators to get more information about the case and will provide more details as they become available.

[Updated at 12:10 p.m., Sept. 1: Sheriff’s homicide Det. Howard Cooper, who is handling the investigation, said Alcantar was not a gang member, although the person who shot him may have been. 

Witnesses described the assailant as a Latino in his late teens to mid 20s. There have been two descriptions of the getaway vehicle, Cooper said. The first is a dark-colored, four-door compact vehicle. The second is a dark-colored mid-sized SUV, he said.
