A story for every victim

Cordero Dougal, 26

Cordero Dougal, a 26-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Aug. 4, in the 1300 block of East Imperial Highway in the Willowbrook neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Dougal and his 22-year-old girlfriend were sitting in his white sedan in the parking lot of a 76 gas station and market about 12:50 a.m. when another sedan pulled up on the driver’s side of the car, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

Someone in the second car began shooting with a high-caliber weapon, Mendoza said, striking Dougal and his girlfriend, as well as a 53-year-old man sitting on a wall about 10 feet from the market.

Dougal’s girlfriend managed to climb into the driver’s seat, where Dougal had been sitting, and drive him two miles to the Los Angeles Police Department’s South East Division station, Mendoza said. There, officers summoned paramedics, who pronounced Dougal dead at 1:06 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner’s records.

The girlfriend and the man sitting on the wall were both taken to a nearby hospital; they were expected to survive, Mendoza said.

Investigators are looking surveillance video from the market, and believe there could have been one or two people in the gunman’s car, Mendoza said, but the only description of the shooter is black and male.

Dougal was involved in a gang, Mendoza said, and investigators believe the shooting is gang-related.
