A story for every victim

David Flores, 36

David Flores, a 36-year-old Latino, was shot by Los Angeles police Monday, April 22, near South Figueroa Street and West Gardena Boulevard in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.

About 6:40 a.m., officers from the LAPD’s Southeast Division responded to a call of a family dispute in which shots were fired in the 16700 block of South Denver Avenue, according to police.

As officers were on their way, they received information that a man was in the intersection near South Figueroa Street. As the two officers approached the intersection, they saw a man who matched the description of the suspect and was armed with a gun, police said.

The man, later identified as Flores, shot at the officers as they got out of their vehicle, and the officers fired back, authorities said.

Flores was struck and pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

One of the rounds fired by Flores struck the front passenger door of the police car but no officers were injured, authorities said. Police said they recovered a gun from the scene.

The officers were identified by the department as Andrew Do and Bryan Tahuite.
