A story for every victim

David Garcia, 39

David Garcia, a 39-year-old Latino, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, after sustaining blunt force injuries several months earlier in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:50 p.m. on June 21, 2015, Long Beach police responded to a call about a dispute at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Ohio Avenue, according to a news release. Officers found that Garcia had chest and head injuries.

Garcia's friend Riccardo Gonzalez Rangel, 57, and Garcia got into an argument, according to the release. At some point, Rangel hit his friend several times with a milk crate, the release said. Garcia then fell and hit his head.

Garcia was taken to a hospital where he was treated for brain injuries. He was later released to hospice care, but on Dec. 6 he returned to a hospital for additional treatment, according to coroner’s records. He died during surgery at 8:22 p.m. Jan. 3, coroner’s records said.

Rangel was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, but he now faces one count of murder. He is scheduled to return to court June 21.
