A story for every victim

Derick Hollie, 20

Derick Hollie, a 20-year-old black man, was found dead Sunday, June 19, in the 500 block of Queensway Drive in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers were preparing to tow a car at about 12:30 a.m. when they discovered Hollie's body inside, according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.

Initially, detectives were unable to determine how Hollie died, but after further investigation, it was determined that he had suffered closed head trauma (a hard blow to the head) "with petechial hemorrhages," officials said. Such hemorrhages may be a sign of strangulation.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old transient, who was a friend of the victim, in connection with the killing.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Hollie died somewhere in Los Angeles. Because of this, Long Beach police are now working with the LAPD Southeast division on the death investigation.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact Long Beach police homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans or Todd Johnson at (562) 570-7244, or Los Angeles police homicide Detectives Sammy Marullo or John Jamison at (213) 485-4341. Anonymous tips may be submitted by e-mail or on the Web at LongBeach.gov/police.
