Devante Mendez, 24

Devante Mendez, a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the 5300 block of South Figueroa Street in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:30 p.m., Mendez was standing on the sidewalk alone when a vehicle pulled up, said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Barling.

A person in the back passenger seat of the vehicle shot Mendez, then the car fled north on South Figueroa Street.

Mendez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

In the moments before the shooting, Mendez approached the vehicle, described as a light-colored sedan. The motive is unknown. Mendez was not a gang member, Barling said.
