A story for every victim

Eloyn Morales, 19 [Updated]

Eloyn Morales, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sat., Feb. 20 in the 7900 block of Maie Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Morales was allegedly attempting to rob someone at knife point when, in response, that person pulled out a gun and shot Morales to death.

Authorities were called to the location at 12:58 a.m., and Morales was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:07 a.m., Winter said.

[Updated March 24: Authorities said they are no longer confident that Morales was attempting to rob someone at knife point when he was shot and killed.

Detective Jeffrey Leslie, who is handling the investigation, told The Times on Monday, March 22,  that although initial signs pointed to Morales being shot during the commission of a robbery, that may not be the case.

Leslie said they are still trying to figure out the sequence of events that led up to Morales' death. They are seeking information about the shooter and whether a friend may have been with Morales at the time he was shot.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.]
