England Curtis Russell, a 53-year-old black man, died Sunday, July 28, six days after he was wounded in the 1000 block of East 78th Street in Los Angeles’ Florence neighborhood, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Russell was standing near a liquor store at about 9:45 p.m. July 22 when a person got out of a dark-colored truck and shot him, LAPD Det. Supervisor Sal LaBarbara said.

The shooter jumped into the waiting vehicle, which fled southbound on Central Avenue, LaBarbera said.

Russell was taken to a hospital, where he died July 28 at 7:32 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

[Update, Sept. 3, 2013: Jorge Alberto Alvarado, 31, pleaded not guilty Aug. 12 to one count of murder and one count of having an unlawful assault rifle, said Jane Robison, a public information officer with the L.A. County district attorney’s office.

He is due in court Sept. 6 and is being held without bail.]
