Eric was one of my closest friends while we were students at Downtown Business Magnets High School in DTLA. I was a resident of Hollywood for 4 years after emigrating from Ukraine in ‘96 when Eric and I met in school — which means we were 14-15 years old. We bonded over rap and hip-hop culture. One of my most cherished memories is Eric passing me a CD with Nas’ sophomore album It Was Written. We were on a school bus, probably about to be bussed to Griffith Park for our PE class. Later, when we had an assignment in English class to choose our favorite poems to read out loud in class, I picked “I Gave You Power” from Nas’ album, which was a song in which he personifies a gun and narrates its murderous exploits from owner to owner. Eric chose Tupac Shakur’s Dear Mama. In September 1996, when Shakur was shot in Las Vegas, Eric came to that same English class where we recited the lyrics and blurted out “Southside Crips” in reference to Shakur’s murder. Two years later, when Chuck Philips, in his expose in the Times, implicated the Southside Crips members as the gang imvolved, I realized Eric knew some insider info and growing up in Gardena, likely heard what the streets knew and passed it on to me, a naive dude who didn’t speak English just a years prior. I pray for Eric and his family, especially his mother, constantly. He is gone but isn’t forgotten.
