A story for every victim

Everardo Cortez, 42

Everardo Cortez, a 42-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Feb. 20, in the 1100 block of South Garrey Street in San Pedro, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Cortez got into an argument with a person in another vehicle about 2:15 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The vehicle then turned around and a person inside opened fire.

Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:46 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

An off-duty LAPD officer driving a personal vehicle nearby witnessed the shooting and as he called 911, he followed the suspect’s vehicle, said LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

The officer described the vehicle as a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer, Lopez said.

The SUV stopped about a mile away, near the intersection of West Santa Cruz Street and North Cabrillo Avenue, and the suspect opened fire at the officer.

The officer returned fire, and the SUV sped west on West Santa Cruz Street.

Several rounds hit the officer’s vehicle but the officer was not injured, Lopez said. It was unclear if the officer’s gunfire struck the suspect.
