A story for every victim

Gabriel Leyva, 19

Gabriel Leyva, a 19-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Friday, Oct. 30, in the 16800 block of East Bellbrook Street in Covina, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Leyva was visiting a friend when the two decided to walk to a nearby store shortly after 1 a.m. said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. John Covina.

As they were walking, Leyva and his friend ran into two other young men who were also out walking, Corina said. The four got into an argument  — "a 'What are you looking at?' type argument," Corina said — and one of the suspects pulled out a knife and stabbed Leyva.

The attacker, described as Latino and in his late teens or early 20s, ran away with his friend, Corina said.

Leyva was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:39 a.m., about 12 minutes after he was stabbed, according to coroner's records. His friend was not injured.

Investigators believe the assailant is a gang member, Corina said, but it doesn't appear that Leyva was a gang member.
