Gang member convicted of 2013 Alhambra killing

A San Gabriel man was convicted on Oct. 22 in the fatal shooting a man in his Alhambra garage in 2013, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

The jury deliberated for a day before finding Xia Lin, a 28-year-old Asian man, guilty of first-degree murder for killing Qui Jin Fang, 43. Jurors also found true gun and gang allegations.

The prosecutor said Lin, a gang member affiliated with Bamboo United, dressed himself in a hooded sweatshirt and ski mask on Sept. 22, 2013, and walked up to Fang’s Alhambra home in the 300 block of North Monterey Street.

Fang was sitting in his car in the garage when Lin approached. Lin shot Fang several times with a .22 caliber gun with a silencer, the prosecutor said. Fang, a Chinese restaurant owner, died at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

One of Fang’s neighbors witnessed Lin leaving the home and called police, who later discovered the body, the prosecutor said.

Lin walked to a movie theater where he discarded a fanny pack that held the murder weapon and ammunition, according to court testimony.

A woman leaving the theater found the fanny pack shortly after and called police. The same woman saw Lin looking for the fanny pack and pointed him out to police.

Lin was about to leave the area in a white Mercedes when law enforcement approached the car. When the arrested Lin, police discovered a sweatshirt and a ski mask in the car, the prosecutor added.

DNA evidence found on the trigger of the gun and inside the mask linked Lin to the killing, as well as eyewitness testimony.

Lin is scheduled to return to court Dec. 1. He could face a sentence of 50 years to life in prison.
