A story for every victim

Gary Eugene Hunt, 53

Gary Eugene Hunt, a 53-year-old white man, was shot to death Sunday, Nov. 15, in the 28700 block of Iron Village Drive in Castaic Canyons, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

At about 8:11 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the home where Hunt lived with his wife, daughter and son, Joshua Tyler Hunt, 23, said Lt. Steve Jauch.

When deputies arrived they found Gary Hunt with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso and his son, Joshua, with a single gunshot wound to the head, Jauch said.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital. Gary Hunt was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Joshua Hunt’s death appears to be suicide, according to coroner’s records; he was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m.

“Preliminarily, it looks as if we’re dealing with a murder-suicide,” Jauch said. “We are not actively looking for other suspects.”

Jauch said the father and son had an argument that evening, but investigators don’t know what the dispute was about, Jauch said. Gary Hunt’s wife, Joshua Hunt's mother, was the only other person home at the time of the shooting, he said.

Investigators found one handgun in the house, which they believe belonged to Joshua Hunt, who worked as a security guard, Jauch said.

Joshua Hunt was arrested Oct. 7 on suspicion of driving under the influence. He had been  scheduled to appear in court Dec. 4, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
