Hawthorne man sentenced for baby's death

A Hawthorne man was sentenced Feb. 9 to 15 years in state prison for the death of his girlfriend’s 14-month-old baby, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Julio Mejia, 48, pleaded no contest Jan. 8 to two counts of assault on a child causing great bodily injury resulting in the death of Bryan Cartagena, 1.

Prosecutors said that on Aug. 25, 2013, Cartagena died at the hospital after suffering blunt force trauma to his abdomen.

Several days later, police arrested Mejia and Sandra Cartagena, the baby's mother, in connection with the death. The case against Sandra Cartagena was later dropped because of insufficient evidence.
