A story for every victim

Heneraetta Hammond, 74 [Updated]

Heneraetta Hammond, 74, an older white woman, died from a single gunshot to the head at 23013 Nadine Circle in Torrance in what Torrance police said was a possible murder-suicide or double suicide in which Hammond's husband also died. Her time of death was listed as 8:04 a.m. Thursday, June 28.

Police said officers went to the residence just before 8 a.m. on June 28 after a caretaker reported arriving home and finding the couple dead of gunshot wounds. A note and two guns were found at the scene. Both husband and wife were struggling with health problems, police said. Detectives have not yet concluded whether the pair may have committed suicide together, or whether he killed her, then himself.

[Updated Jan. 22, 2010: Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said this case is still classified as undetermined -- meaning coroner's investigators do not know whether Hammond shot herself or was shot by her husband. This case has not been classified a homicide.]
