Herbert Antonio Martinez, 56

Herbert Antonio Martinez, a 56-year-old Latino, died Monday, June 10, after he was beaten in the 5200 block of West Sunset Boulevard in East Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 8:25 p.m. on May 26, Martinez was standing outside a 99 Cents Only store when he got into an altercation with another person, said Los Angeles police Det. Sean Kinchla.

During the altercation, Martinez was punched in the head and fell to the ground. Martinez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead June 10.

Darnell Kilgore, a 32-year-old black man, has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of battery with serious bodily injury, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Kilgore is due back in court Aug. 27. Kilgore was believed to be experiencing homelessness, police said.
