Hyun Soo Chung, 48

Hyun Soo Chung, a 48-year-old Korean woman, was found strangled to death Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the 400 block of South Berendo Avenue in Koreatown, according to law enforcement and prosecutors.

About 2:25 p.m. officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division responded to a call of a possible dead body inside an apartment, according to a news release from the LAPD. The death was deemed suspicious and homicide detectives responded to investigate.

The suspect was identified by police as Joseph Chung, a 50-year-old Korean man. Police said in a statement that he is the ex-husband of Hyun Chung and there was a history of domestic violence.

On Jan. 27, Chung turned himself in at a police station in Santa Cruz.

Chung has been charged with one count of murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Prosecutors said in a news release that Chung strangled his wife sometime between Jan. 19 and 20.
