A story for every victim

Israel Lopez, 29

Israel Lopez, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Friday, June 20, in the 11000 block of Carmenita Road in South Whittier, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Orange County coroner’s records.

About 7:19 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon and found Lopez on the curb suffering from stab wounds, said Lt. Dave Coleman with the department.

Investigators believe that Lopez was involved in an altercation with another person. Witnesses said that a person was seen running from the scene, Coleman said.

Lopez was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:56 p.m., according to the Orange County coroner.

Francisco Reza Guardado, a 35-year-old Latino, was arrested on a parole violation June 24 after being spotted in unincorporated Whittier, Coleman said. Guardado is suspected of being connected to Lopez's killing.

Guardado and another man were barricaded inside a residence for about four hours before being taken into custody.

Guardado was charged June 26 with evading an officer and unlawful driving, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
