A story for every victim

Ivan Karl Spencer, 55

Ivan Spencer, a 55-year-old black man, was fatally shot Thursday, June 9, while driving south on the 110 freeway near the 91 freeway interchange in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Spencer was shot several times about 2:30 a.m. After calling 911 to report "I'm shot," Spencer crashed his Toyota Prius on the eastbound 91 connector.

Moments before, Spencer had left the Starz strip club on Rosecrans Avenue, where he was the general manager, said Los Angeles Police Det. Sal LaBarbera. The club is owned by Spencer's girlfriend, with whom he lived in Rolling Hills.

Investigators believe the victim may have been targeted. LaBarbera said detectives are working on many tips and are conducting interviews at the club.

Spencer worked at the club for about 15 years and was known for having a calm demeanor, LaBarbera said.

Anyone with information should call LaBarbera at (213) 485-4341. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be directed to (877) LAPD-24-7. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).
