A story for every victim

James McQuater, 40

James McQuater, a 40-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, Sept. 4 in the 200 block of East Avenue R-3 in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 2 p.m., deputies responded to the area and found McQuater in the street across from his home suffering from a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.  A weapon was recovered at the scene.

McQuater was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:23 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

McQuater’s wife, Angelique Spurlock, a 46-year-old black woman, was arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene, according to the news release.

Spurlock was charged Sept. 10 with one count of murder. She is due in court for an arraignment Oct. 7, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors allege that the couple got into an argument and Spurlock pulled out a gun and shot him. McQuater was trying to get help, which is why he was found in the street.

Spurlock is being held on $2-million bail.
