A story for every victim

Valerie Camacho, 6 [Updated]

Valerie Camacho, a 6-year-old girl initially identified by the coroner as Jane Doe #30, died Friday, May 14, in the 6900 block of Remmet Avenue in Canoga Park, according to Los Angeles police.

Valerie's name had been withheld until coroner's investigators could speak with her father, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

Los Angeles firefighters received a report of a stabbing about 1:15 p.m. and found the bodies of Martha Carmona, a 21-year-old Latina, and her daughter, Valerie, authorities said.

Carmona and the girl were pronounced dead at the scene, said LAPD Officer Gregory Baek. "Each had knife wounds," Baek said.

Police said Friday night that after interviewing the husband, the case remains wide open. No suspect or motive has been determined so far in the killings.

[Update Jan. 6: Martha Carmona's uncle, Manuel Carmona, was arrested at his home on July 6 and later charged with two counts of murder.

He is believed to have killed Martha and her daughter Valerie.

Manuel Carmona, a 51-year-old Latino, is currently being held at the Men's Central Jail in downtown. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24, 2011 at the Van Nuys Municipal Court.]
