Francisco Mendez, 19 [Updated]

Francisco Javier Mendez, a 19-year-old Latino, died Sunday, April 18, hours after he was shot in the 6300 block of Hood Avenue in Huntington Park, according to Huntington Park police officials.

Mendez was found sitting in a vehicle with a single gunshot wound to the head after officers received a call reporting gunfire and a shooting victim about 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, said Sgt. Ron Davis of the  Huntington Park Police Department.

Investigators declined to say where he was seated in the car. Mendez was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died early the next morning, according to coroner's records.

There were witnesses to the incident; however investigators still do not have a motive for Mendez's death.

[For the record: An earlier post listed Mendez's first name as Javier since it was the name provided in the initial coroner's report. Huntington Park Police have  confirmed Francisco was the victim's first name and Javier his middle name.]
