Javier Mendez, 35

Javier Mendez, a 35-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Thursday, Feb. 13, in the 19100 block of East Elberland Street in South San Jose Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Shortly before 5 p.m., a man called the Walnut Sheriff's Station and said that a person was in his home with a gun demanding money, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

Deputies arrived at the home and saw a black vehicle speeding toward them; they pursued.

Mendez got out of the vehicle near Nogales Street and La Puente Road. He then ran into a market, according to the news release. Mendez ran through the back door of the market and into several backyards. Deputies eventually found Mendez in the 19100 block of Elberland Street, where he was shot. No weapon was recovered at the time.  

Mendez was pronounced dead at 5:46 p.m. at the scene, according to coroner's records.

A woman who was in the black vehicle was taken into custody, and a child who was in the vehicle was taken into protective custody.
