A story for every victim

Jazmyne Eng, 40 [Updated]

Jazmyne Eng, a 40-year-old Asian woman, was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies Wednesday, Jan. 4, in the 9300 block of East Valley Boulevard in Rosemead, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Eng appeared to be mentally ill as she held a hammer and threatened to strike people outside a mental health clinic Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies responded to the area and attempted to talk Eng into putting down the hammer, but she did not respond to their orders, officials said.

They then tried to subdue her by stunning her with a Taser, but that did not stop her, officials said. She advanced toward the deputies, holding the hammer above her head when a deputy fired two rounds, the Sheriff's Department said.

Eng was pronounced dead at the scene. Coroner's records show she suffered gunshot wounds to her chest and left hand.
