About 4 p.m., Dominick Teret, a 22-year-old Latino, made a 911 call to say that Baca had been accidentally shot, according to LAPD Det. James Fillmore. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:09 p.m.

Teret later changed his story, Fillmore said, saying that Baca had instead committed suicide. Coroner’s investigators ruled the death a homicide.

On Dec. 23, Teret, of Tarzana, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in Baca’s death. He also faces allegations of using a shotgun in the killing.

About a year before the attack, police had responded to a domestic abuse call at the same residence where Baca was killed, Fillmore said.

Teret faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison if convicted. He is scheduled to return to court Jan. 18 for a preliminary hearing.
