A story for every victim

Jeremiah Owings, 42

Jeremiah Owings, a 42-year-old white man, was shot and killed on Thursday, July 21, in the 100 block of South Willow Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m., as Owings, a documented gang member, was hanging out with members of his gang in the rear parking lot of an apartment complex, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.

Investigators believe several members of a rival gang walked up to the group and began shooting, Rosson said.

Owings was struck multiple times by gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:13 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

No one else was injured in the shooting, Rosson said.

“We think this was probably retribution from a previous shooting that happened in Compton, in the rival gang’s neighborhood,” Rosson said.

Investigators don’t have a description of the shooters, he said, but they’re hoping to learn more by looking at footage from nearby security cameras. “We have very uncooperative witnesses,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
