Jermail Gillis, 26, a black man, was stabbed and beaten at 2064 Shaur St. in Compton and died at 11:17 a.m. Saturday, April 7.
Gillis fought with mother's boyfriend Arthur Huff, 46, who attacked him with a hammer and knife in a front yard after an argument over a bicycle. The mother tried to stop the attack on her son, and managed to get the hammer from Huff. But Huff then stabbed Gillis before her eyes.
Deputies called to break up the fight found Gillis lying on the sidewalk. Huff, a black man, was arrested and charged with murder. Victim Gillis was, "a nice guy. He had never been to jail or anything," said Sheriff's Det. Kevin Lloyd.
