Jerome Clifford Hayes, a 61-year-old black man, was fatally shot Wednesday, Feb. 21,  in the 800 block of East La Verne Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Hayes was working on his car with a friend in the alley behind his home when a man with a gun approached them about 10:35 p.m., said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.

Investigators found several rifle casings in the area, Hagerty said.

Hayes was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the back.
