Jesse Duron Smith (2016-07-12)

Jesse Duron Smith, a 40-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 12, in the 12900 block of South Hoover Street in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1:10 a.m., police received a call of a shooting, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nate Kouri. When officers arrived, they found Smith in the street and a group of people trying to help him.

Smith was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m., according to police and coroner’s records.

Investigators believe that a group of about five or six people were standing in the area when a person walked along West 130th Street, stood on the corner and began firing at the group, Kouri said.

Although police believe the attacker may have been a gang member, Smith was not a documented gang member.

Police are trying to corroborate a suspect description. The group was memorializing a friend who had recently died of natural causes.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Criminal Gang Homicide Division at (323) 786-5111. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
